As adults we typically think of ourselves as a much smarter version of our younger self. Life has taught us dreams are for children and, well, the real world doesn’t work like that. However, I think we often misunderstand the use of dreaming. I think of myself at age five with a pretend cape running as fast as I could through the yard leaping over objects as if I were flying. Its not about being able to fly, its about being free and having no limits in life. Wouldn’t that be great to return to that place? A place where nobody tells you to “grow up” or “you can’t do that”. Again its not necessarily about the dream but the possibilities that come from dreaming.
Take a few minutes today to see things through the eyes of a child. Try to see your day through the eyes of a child. What would a kid say if he/she came into your office? What would a 9 year old order at Starbucks? This may seem simplistic but I believe its this shift in thinking that will bring the daily fun and joy back into life.

I am working on a book, In the Meantimes that will hopefully be done by April 2011. This will be an easy read of daily exercises to help my clients think outside the box and expand their views of the world.
Here is an excerpt from week 1. Feel free to try them out and post a comment.
Day 2
Cartoon Character- Take 15 minutes and research a cartoon character. Write a one paragraph description of what the character is, his personality, and what show he is one. As childish as this seems try to write down a few more things that caught your attention. What benefits could this character represent to a child?
Day 3
New food- Eat something you have never eaten before. You must find something you have NEVER eaten before. This doesn’t have to be a meal. My son the other day ate a scorpion in a sucker. He now is the only kid in his school that knows what a scorpion tastes like. Write it down in your journal.

I write the post today in my blog out of a deep concern for those around me. I look around and so many are struggling to find their way, trying to find significance and hope again, much less happiness. In our politically correct society we have removed the true north from our compass and replaced it with nothing. We then have a society that fends for itself trying to make heads or tails of their reality. Many want to lose weight, become financially healthy, or be a better parent. Others may want to reach new heights or learn a new skill. However, most of what I see is words not actions. We, including myself, make excuses for staying stuck in life. We justify it by saying, “I just need to accept who I am” or “Life is just not as easy for some of us”. While these statements may be true, you do have the most powerful thing in the world, a precious gift, choice. Steven R. Covey writes in his book “The 8th Habit”, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response. In those choices lie our growth and our happiness” (Covey, 2004).
Inaction is still an action. By doing nothing you are performing maybe the most damaging action you can perform. I ask you WHY, WHY! You have a legacy to leave for your children. What will it be? Will you choose a path of greatness or mediocrity? Will you finally take control of today in even a small way? Put the small things in perspective of the big picture of your life. You were created for more, be great today. Inspire yourself and others today, use the power of choice. You can find helpful practical insights to help your daily choices at www.nathanfunston.com/blog.

As I struggled today with my Monday “to do” list I had to ask myself, “How would I coach somebody else through this?”. As I am getting ready to launch a tour this summer, the daily details become a stumbling block to creativity but they have to get done. So I devised a thought. If I can divide my time up to get the necessary things done such as earning a living while forging new trails that would be great. The first would be to maintain a schedule, at least the parts of it that are necessary. I still have to earn a living. The second thing is to set aside space for creativity, writing, and development. The third item I need to do is assess progress of the two and make an appraisal of balance. I try never to end a day without an objective look at what I have done and a plan for tomorrow. This allows me to sleep at night and put my mind to be for a little while.
1. Maintain your schedule 70%
2. Creative development 20%
3. Assessment of balance and create a check point for progress 10%

You never know the vastness of something great when you are standing right next to it. It’s only from 35,000ft that you truly appreciate the grandeur. Only God can see from that perspective. I recently flew over the Grand Canyon on a clear February day. As I looked at the cars below I thought they can only see the edge of the cliff and into the surrounding valleys. Their views of the expanse are blocked. From my view I could appreciate what they could not comprehend.
If we look at our life from only daily issues we fail to see the overall picture. Make sure to step back from your struggles and look at the big picture. If they are insignificant to the big picture don’t sweat it, they’ll pass.
